Genetic susceptibility to strangles
Different horses in the same outbreak suffer very different clinical disease on infection with S. equi. This 2-year project funded by Bransby Home of Rest for Horses seeks to identify genetic markers in the horse genome that correspond with increased resistance or susceptibility to infection with S. equi.
If successful a genetic test will be developed to identify horses that may be more likely to suffer severe disease or become carriers in order that these horses may be vaccinated more regularly or appropriately screened to reduce the severity and frequency of strangles outbreaks.
