If you have a question about the study, please have a look at the FAQs below. If your question has still not been answered, please contact Dee via email: firstname.lastname@example.org
or telephone (01638 751000 Ext 1506).
Do I need to fill out the whole questionnaire from scratch each time I do my update?
No that should not be necessary as we have designed it so the questionnaire you see when you log on to update is your last entry. You need only update the relevant section of the questionnaire where anything has changed. If nothing has changed at all then you can just navigate straight to the submit button. However, if you have not returned since the website upgrade in February 2015, there may be some small bits of information missing that you will unfortunately need to fill out again.
- How often will I need to submit information to the study?
We would ask that after you register and complete the baseline questionnaire, you keep us updated with your animal's health or management at least every three months – so only 4 updates per year! Although more regular updates would be better and one each month would be ideal. Automatic reminders will be sent via email monthly, however frequently you are updating.
- Do I need to do the online weight tracker and take measurements each month?
This part of the study is completely voluntary although we hope that you will find it useful. If you choose not to do the measurements, please update the Body Condition Score, Cresty Neck Score and estimated weight in Section 1 of the questionnaire as this is particularly valuable information related to changing the risk of laminitis.
- I am late with my submission, can I still carry on participating in the study?
Yes, of course you can. Carry on as normal and update your questionnaire based on your last submission.
- What happens to the information that I submit?
All information submitted via this website is secure and confidential and will only be used for research purposes. The information will be used for statistical analysis. All data will be coded and kept anonymous and no individual owners or animals will be named in the results. The results will be used to develop evidence-based guidelines for owners, to help reduce the impact of laminitis in Britain.
- My horse/pony has been diagnosed with laminitis, what do I do?
Please let us know by completing and submitting the Laminitis Reporting Form (LRF) as soon as possible after the diagnosis. The LRF is a quick checklist of clinical signs commonly associated with laminitis. It might be handy to print a copy and keep down at the yard - the information can always be transferred to the online form and submitted at a later date. If laminitis is suspected, please consult with your vet.
- Can I enrol my donkey or mule in the study?
Unfortunately not. We are only currently collecting information from horses and ponies.
- My horse/pony has had laminitis previously, does this exclude them from participating in the study?
Not at all. You will be asked to answer some questions about any previous known episodes of laminitis as this information will be very useful!
- My horse/pony has never had laminitis and they are an unlikely candidate. Why will my contribution be important to this study?
Information from those horses and ponies that have never had laminitis (and hopefully never will!) is a vital part of the study. These "healthy" animals will enable us to work out the proportion of horses that are affected by laminitis in the population, as well as being a reference of comparison between non-affected and affected animals in our investigation into risk factors for the disease. Without having information from non-affected animals, this study would be without context and in fact it wouldn’t be possible for us to achieve what we want from this work. It is that important!
Registration and login FAQ
If you are having any trouble with the registration or login to your account, please refer to the FAQs below. Please avoid making more than one account. If you cannot find a solution below, please contact Dee at email@example.com
- I am going through the registration steps but I cannot proceed as no “Next” button appears.
Make sure that you have completed all fields (boxes) that are outlined in red. For example, when asked how long your horse has been at the property, please fill out both the year and month fields even if one of them is zero.
- I have registered but I have not received an activation email and I cannot activate my account.
Please check the spam/junk folder of your email as the activation email can sometimes end up in there! If you still can’t find it, contact Dee.
- I have requested a new password but have received a blank email.
Please contact Dee who will be able to provide you with a temporary password, with which you can access your account and change it to one of your own choosing using the blue “Change password” button in the top right hand corner of your screen.
- I can’t seem to log into my account.
Try using another internet browser (i.e. Mozilla Firefox if you are using Internet Explorer) or update your browser if it is out of date. If the problem still persists, please contact Dee.
- I am trying to update multiple horses, but keep getting logged out.
Use the blue buttons in the top right hand corner of your screen to “Go back” rather than pressing the backspace key or the back arrow in your browser. After you submit the questionnaire, press the “Go to home” button which will take you back to the account for that horse and by navigating backwards using the blue buttons you will get to your main account. We advise you update one horse at a time, by doing both their weight tracker and questionnaire before moving onto the next horse, to avoid confusing the accounts.
