Aht gala race day CHARITY RACE
At the AHT's Gala Race Day, held at Newmarket’s July Course on Saturday 25 June 2016, eight intrepid riders competed in our charity race.
The Charity Race, which was won by 17-year-old Hannah Knowles of Newmarket on her second attempt at the race, provided an exciting addition to the programme of the day. Hannah fought off competition from seven other highly skilled riders to battle her way to victory in an exhilarating race on incredibly soft ground.
Hannah said: “After competing in the race last year, I got such a buzz I knew I wanted to do it again. So to come back and win the race is an amazing feeling. I love race riding and being a huge animal lover, the charity race for me could not be more perfect - allowing me to do something I love and raise money for such an amazing charity! Thank you to the AHT for giving me this opportunity and to John Ryan for letting me ride the fabulous The Gay Cavalier.”

The mile long race requires a huge amount of dedication, skill and physical fitness from me and cooperation of a willing equine partner! Having never ridden racehorses, this is a very tough challenge but one I am excited about. Lots of cycling, swimming and early mornings on Newmarket Heath.
I am privileged to be working at the AHT for my university work placement. Focused within the Immunology department, my work investigates the horse immune response to Streptococcus equi to better understand immunity during Strangles, the most common contagious equine disease. Improved understanding of S. equi will direct work towards the development of an effective vaccine and improved diagnostic tests. Having experienced the devastating impact of Strangles, I am delighted to have the opportunity to work on this project.
This is one example of valuable research carried out by the AHT. Fundraising is vital to continue the important work to help fight disease and injury and potentially save the lives of many animals. I have pledged to raise £4,000; your support and donations would be gratefully received. Thank you. https://www.justgiving.com/elizabethevansaht

In preparation for the race, along with studying for my AS level exams, I have been riding out for Mr Ryan as much as possible, as well as going to the racing museum to have sessions on the equicizer with a very patient Jon Snaith!
I try and keep myself as fit as possible whether it be running, cycling, playing for the college volleyball and basketball teams or in the gym.
I cannot wait to have this opportunity to raise money again for such an incredible charity. https://www.justgiving.com/Hannah-Knowles9
The AHT does valuable work for the health of the horse and as I work in the horse racing industry, it is important that I can give back to this incredible organisation.
If the money I raise can be used in research to enrich racehorses lives then it will be very worthwhile.
It is also the shove I need to get fit and push myself physically!
Having lived in Newmarket, I know the AHT quite well - and it's the only Charity I know of its kind, doing the work that it does. So what a great cause to raise funds for!
I actually worked in racing for 4 years and attended the British Racing School with a dream of being a jockey - unfortunately it wasn't meant to be, so this is the perfect opportunity to make it happen for the day.
I'm really looking forward to the big day and have always wanted to race at Newmarket - fingers crossed!
As a horse or pet owner you understand the fine line between a healthy animal and a poorly one and it’s not until you have a problem that you realise the importance of the work that AHT do.
My horse Vinnie is fit at the moment and I wanted to take advantage of that by getting him, and myself fitter, and have the challenge of a Charity race to experience what it must be like to race at Newmarket. He has moved from a livery yard and is now with Michael Mullineaux near Nantwich and I go and ride out. I have had to diet quite heavily and have dropped from 14 stone to just over 12 now with still a bit to do!
It is a true challenge in the greatest sense of the word and I hope we can do ourselves justice whilst raising money for a fantastic cause. www.justgiving.com/patrick-chesters1
Riding in the AHT charity race has allowed me to fulfil two ambitions, firstly to raise more for this truly remarkable charity which, as an animal lover is close to my heart and secondly, to once again have an opportunity to race ride.
I started my racing career as an apprentice at Ian Balding's and later went to Gordon Richard as a conditional. It was while working for IB that I had my first ride which was for the Queen, I came 3rd. However to many pies and a lack of focus meant limited success in the saddle...
I have spent most of my time in racing as a travelling head man and for the last four years I have held the post of Chief Executive of the National Association of Stable Staff proudly representing the racing staff of Great Britain.

I lost the staffie in this photo to a tumour last year, and am pleased to be supporting the AHT, particularly as they conduct research into canine cancers. I also love my horses, and have used the services of the AHT as a referral hospital before now.
I know nothing about racing, and rather fell into this after being ‘given’ a retired racehorse. I’ve learned a lot already - and the fitness test at the Racing School nearly killed me!
After dedicating many hours in the saddle to educating and working young thoroughbreds to reach race fitness and excellence I would now like to take up the challenge myself and try my hand at race riding. And what better way cause to raise both money and awareness, than the AHT Charity race. Whom our industry owe much too.
Victoria de Sousa
I'm married to champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa. Ridden winners as a apprentice myself, but haven't ridden in public for 10 years. Nominated to ride in the race by my friend Anna Hanagan. Decided it would be a nice thing to do for the AHT as we love animals in our house, especially horses and dogs. Really enjoying the build up and training getting ready for the race. http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserPage.action?userUrl=victoriadesousa&pageUrl=2
