Belgium
Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) Neurological Disease
On 30 June 2017, Equi Focus Point, Belgium (EFPB) reported a case of EHV-1 neurological disease on premises in the Couvin region, Belgium. The affected animal presented with ataxia, weakness and bladder dysfunction on 2 June 2017 and had a lapsed vaccination history. The premises, which contained 35 animals, was placed under quarantine. No further cases have developed since this index case resulting in release from quarantine. The positive diagnosis was made on 8 June 2017 by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab.
Equine Herpes Virus-4 (EHV-4) Respiratory Disease
On 30 June 2017, EFPB reported a case of EHV-4 respiratory disese on premises in the Bruges region, Belgium. The affected animal presented with pyrexia on 29 June 2017 and was not vaccinated. The positive diagnosis was made on 30 June by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab.
France
Equine Herpes Virus-4 (EHV-4) Respiratory Disease
On 3 July 2017, Réseau d’Epidémio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine (RESPE) reported a case of EHV-4 respiratory disease on premises in Orne, France. The positive diagnosis was made on 1 July 2017 by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab by LABEO-Frank Duncombe, Normandy. There are no further details available on this case at this stage.
United Kingdom
Equine Herpes Virus-4 (EHV-4) Respiratory Disease
On 3 July, the Animal Health Trust confirmed a case of EHV-4 respiratory disease on premises in Ayrshire, Scotland. The affected animal was a five-year-old unvaccinated Cob gelding that presented with pyrexia, profuse nasal discharge and lymphadenopathy on 30 June 2017. This is currently the only clinically affected animal amongst a group of 15 on this premises. The positive diagnosis was made on 3 July by qPCR on a nasopharyngeal swab.
