PATIENT SAFETY FIRST
At AHT Referrals we take patient care seriously and strive to develop new techniques to minimise harm in the surgical setting. In November 2008 we modified the World Health Organisation Surgical Safety Checklist for use within our theatres. We felt it was a useful tool to improve communication of theatre teams and put patient safety first. We believe we are the first veterinary hospital in the UK to use such a systematic approach to patient safety.

Our theatre manager, James Gasson and one of our former theatre nurses, Catherine Wager, have published an article in The Veterinary Nurse journal about our experience of using the Surgical Safety Checklist within our hospital and the benefits it brings to our patients and staff. The article provides the history and evolution of the checklist and suggested adaptations for veterinary use applicable to all settings. To view this article, please click here.
