pony power winners enjoy eventing masterclass with lucy wiegersma and eric winter
The Pony Club’s Lord Leconfield Branch in Sussex enjoyed an eventing masterclass with current world number three event rider, Lucy Wiegersma and cross-country course designer Eric Winter on 8 April 2012.
Lord Leconfield won the masterclass after supporting our ‘Pony Power’ fundraising campaign.
We were The Pony Club’s charity of the year for 2010 and 2011. Pony Power aimed to educate young riders about the important work we do for the health and welfare of horses, as well as best practice for looking after their ponies.
Pony Clubs all over the country took part by holding fundraising initiatives, collectively raising more than £40,000 over two years for our charity.
Every club that raised more than £100 pounds in 2011 was entered into a prize draw for the chance to win the eventing masterclass prize. In 2010, the Pony Club Branch which raised the most money for the Pony Power campaign – Burghley Pony Club - won a dressage clinic hosted by Olympic gold medallist Laura Bechtolsheimer.
The Lord Leconfield’s Pony Power day, held at the Tweseldown cross-country course in Hampshire, enabled young riders to benefit from riding across a top level cross-country course, as well as professional advice from Lucy and Eric. The day was a great success; with 17 riders participating in total, ranging from novice to open, receiving one-on-one coaching from Lucy and Eric.
Eric instructed first and concentrated on the performance of the horses and ponies, helping each rider to get the most out of their ponies’ ability. He also provided exercises to promote an easier and more responsive ride, thereby capitalising on each individual’s ability.
Lucy then took the riders and their ponies out on the course, promoting encouragement and confidence for each combination over the variety of jumps.
Clare Emery, Joint District Commissioner of the Lord Leconfield Pony Club Branch, said: “A very pleasant and beneficial day was had by everyone that took part in the master class- despite the cold!
Eric and Lucy gave the riders some very valuable training tips and ideas to take away and apply in the upcoming summer season.
“Through the Pony Power campaign our Club Members were able to learn a lot about looking after their ponies and the importance of the Animal Health Trust in keeping horses healthy. We are very grateful to the Animal Health Trust to have had this very generous opportunity.”
We would like to thank Lucy Wiegersma and Eric Winter for supporting the Pony Power campaign and taking part in such a wonderful day with the Lord Leconfield Pony Club branch.
