Diagnostic Laboratory Services- Clinical Pathology
The Clinical Pathology team work from our Pathology Laboratories situated within the Centre for Equine Studies at Lanwades Park and encompasses haematology, clinical chemistry, coagulation studies and cytology.
Haematology
Our blood cell counts are performed using our Beckman Coulter ACT diff analyser. Unlike most other veterinary laboratories our white blood cell differential counts are all performed manually from blood smears. This allows us to see changes within the cells and allow us to take into account changes due to sample aging.

Coagulation Studies
We offer a basic coagulation screen to investigate both sides of the coagulation cascade; although further information can be obtained from our full coagulation profile which includes basic haematology with specific focus on platelets and a thrombin clot time to examine the final stage of fibrin formation. We also have assays to identify specific clotting factor deficiencies. We use semi-automated methods which tend not prone to some of the problems seen with fully automated analysers; this also allows us to examine the integrity of the clots formed.
We also offer canine von Willebrands factor antigen testing via Cornell University, New York.

Cytology
We offer a full cytology service utilising the expertise of the Clinical Pathologists at Cambridge Vet School in addition to our AHT staff pathologists. We also offer our specific equine respiratory cytology which includes the unique inflammation score developed by the equine epidemiology team at AHT. In order to provide the most useful interpretation of fluid samples cell counts from a manual counting chamber and total protein by the most appropriate method are included in our cytology reports routinely.
