Diagnostic Laboratory Services- Pathology
The Pathology team work from our Pathology Laboratories situated within the Centre for Equine Studies and from our dedicated post mortem facility within the Allen Centre for Vaccine Studies at Lanwades Park.
The anatomic pathology service includes examination of surgical biopsies, post mortem tissue and immunohistochemistry. Advice on sample selection and submission is available from our pathologists via Customer Services. A full post mortem service is available for horses and small animals. Consultation with the duty pathologist prior to submission of an animal is recommended to determine the most appropriate type of post mortem. Biopsies should be submitted in 10% neutral buffered formalin in a non-glass leak-proof container. Most biopsy specimens are processed overnight, but for urgent cases we can offer a rapid 4 hour processing schedule at additional cost, enabling submitting vets to receive a diagnosis on the same day of sample receipt. We use histological techniques, and immunohistochemical methods to facilitate the identification of disease processes, bacteria and viral antigens in formalin fixed tissues. In addition to our routine haematoxylin and eosin stain, we use stains specific for certain cell types. This enables our pathologists to give more guidance to our clients on the status of excisional margins after tumour removal.
