CGS Management
CGS cases which fit the criteria for treatment may survive.
Correct feeding is important with small, frequent meals of good quality laxative foods. Succulent foods such as carrots, apples and grass should be offered in addition to standard coarse mix, oats or cubes. In general the horse should be encouraged to eat whatever it will. Fresh water should always be available.
Nursing and human contact is crucial, with grooming and washing of sweat covered areas.
Horse should be stabled in a deep straw bed with short walks a few times a day.
There is no medical treatment for EGS. Painkillers such as Bute may be used during colic episodes but there is a poor prognosis if they are required.
