Meredith SmithAfter graduating from Cambridge University in 1999, Merry completed an Internship in Equine Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center, USA. Merry returned to the UK in 2000 to take up position as an Equine Surgery Resident at Leahurst, Liverpool University’s equine veterinary teaching hospital on the Wirral. This post was generously funded by The Horse Trust (formerly Home of Rest for Horses). During her residency Merry developed interests in equine oncology and ophthalmology as well as training as a surgeon and developing her diagnostic skills. In 2005 Merry gained her European diploma in equine surgery. Merry then spent time in practice, as an equine surgeon at the Endell Equine Hospital, Salisbury, Wiltshire, before beginning a PhD “Comparison of low field and high field MRI for the diagnosis of lameness originating from the distal limb"at the Animal Health Trust in February 2006, once again funded by The Horse trust. During her time at the AHT, in addition to her PhD work, Merry has initiated use of Iridium wire brachytherapy as a treatment modality available for equine tumours. Merry has a keen interest in equine diagnostic imaging and equine surgery.

Outside work Merry is a playing member of the Suffolk polo club and is a keen supporter of National Hunt and flat racing.
