Progressive retinal atrophy in English Springer Spaniel
Information for owners who submitted samples from their English Springer Spaniels for PRA research at the AHT.
It is with great satisfaction that the AHT, in collaboration with Gary Johnson’s research group at the University of Missouri-Columbia, has recently launched a DNA test for PRA in the English Springer Spaniel. Information about the research can be viewed at the following:
www.englishspringer.org, www.sesss.org, www.taef.co.uk and www.essfta.org
The research was carried out using a very large number of samples from English Springer Spaniels from the US, and a much smaller number of samples from UK dogs.
The AHT will provide the results of all the dogs that have contributed to the UK research to the owners of those dogs, free of charge, by email. Additionally the owners can request an official certificate, at a cost of £5 per certificate.
Please note: not all ESS samples that have been submitted to the AHT for research over the years will have actually been used during the course of the research. The research focused on dogs that had been diagnosed with gPRA and their very close relatives. Distant relatives of affected dogs, dogs whose PRA status was unknown and dogs that are unrelated to affected dogs are unlikely to have been used.
If you submitted sample(s) to the AHT for PRA research please contact Symone Ingram (symone.ingram@aht.org.uk), stating the full name of each dog you are enquiring about, to find out if you qualify for a free result.
Samples for testing (mouth swabs) should be sent, together with a completed DNA Testing form and payment of £50 inc VAT (cheque or credit card) for each sample to Genetic Services, Animal Health Trust, Lanwades Park, Kentford, Newmarket, Suffolk CB8 7UU.
DNA testing forms can also be downloaded by clicking here.
Enquiries or requests for swab kits should be made to Vikki Lett or Symone Ingram (08700 509144 (telephone) or 08700 502461 (fax)) or via e-mail to dnatesting@aht.org.uk.
