Genetics Tests
PLL TESTING -IMPORTANT
We are delighted that our DNA test for primary lens luxation is proving so useful to breeders - we have had an unprecedented response in the first few weeks of testing. Unfortunately, the level of response has been so great that our systems have been quite overwhelmed. We will be employing extra staff to cope with the demand, but that will take a few weeks to put in place. In the meantime, we would be grateful if clients could avoid contacting us unless it is really necessary. The current turnaround time for this test is about four weeks - however many of you will receive your results more quickly than that and we will endeavour to minimise the delay to clients as far as possible. Thank you for your patience.
Please ensure that all samples returned for DNA testing for PLL are taken using an AHT diagnostic sampling kit (obtainable free of charge from swabrequest@aht.org.uk, please quote number of kits needed and the test required). The only form we can accept for DNA Testing is headed "REQUEST FOR DNA TESTING". If you send in samples accompanied by forms headed "SAMPLE SUBMISSION FOR CANINE GENETIC RESEARCH" or "REQUEST FOR PRIMARY LENS LUXATION DNA RESEARCH RESULT" they cannot be processed and this can lead to long delays in dealing with your request.
The Animal Health Trust is a leading supplier of genetic testing to the veterinary profession and to breeders of dogs, horses, cattle and cats. The basic research for many of the DNA tests now available at the Animal Health Trust was carried out in our own research laboratories (see Genetics Research); in addition, we also offer DNA tests developed in genetics laboratories from around the world. Our range includes tests for hereditary disorders in dogs and cats, as well as traits such as yellow coat colour in Labrador Retrievers and chestnut coat colour in horses.
We also offer comprehensive DNA profiling and parentage testing services for dogs, horses and cattle.
A DNA test to determine a dog’s genotype with respect to Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) is now available. Testing kits can be requested by e-mail from swab.request@aht.org.uk. If you do not have access to email please telephone 01638 555621 or fax 01638 555666.
Owners who submitted samples for the PLL research prior to September 1, 2009 may request test results using a form that will become available on this website on October 19th, 2009. Click on link for form http://www.aht.org.uk/pdf/pllresult.pdf
If you don't see a DNA test for the disease that you are interested in here, please contact us. We are constantly reviewing the range of DNA tests for hereditary diseases which we have on offer. We will consider introducing any test where we can identify a clear need in the UK population of pedigree dogs.
We are currently looking into the feasibility of offering tests for pyruvate kinase deficiency in Basenjis and ceroid lipofuscinosis in English Setters. The mutations for both these diseases are now known, but we need to identify carrier and affected dogs in order to validate the test in our laboratory. If anyone has such dogs and would be prepared to send in cheek swab samples (easily taken from the inside lining of the cheek and non-invasive), they would be making an invaluable contribution to developing DNA testing for these diseases in their breed in the UK. If you think you may be able to help us, please contact us at dnatesting@aht.org.uk or telephone +44 (0) 1638 555621 or fax +44 (0) 1638 555643. Any samples that you send will be handled in strictest confidence.
As a non-profit making organisation, our tests are priced competitively to cover costs - any surplus is re-invested in our research programme into animal disease and welfare.
