INTERIM REPORT - WEST NILE VIRUS, SOUTH OF FRANCE
13th September 2000
The International Collating Centre has received the following information from France:
Two horses presented with clinical signs of ataxia and posterior paralysis at the end of August 2000 and were euthanased. Diagnosis was made by the National Arbovirus Reference Centre, Pasteur Institute, Paris. Both horses tested positive by serology (IgG ELISA) to West Nile virus and for one, serology was confirmed by PCR (RT-PCR on brain tissue). Further analysis is in progress.
At the beginning of September, 2 other horses from the same area presented with similar clinical signs and were euthanased. State Veterinary regulations are in progress (including vector control). Serological enquiries and research on vectors and virus reservoirs have been initiated. Control measures are ongoing.
