HUNGARY
Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA)
On 30th June 2011 the Réseau d’Epidémio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine (RESPE) reported an EIA outbreak in Zala, Hungary. A single horse has been affected with no in contact horse present on the premises. Diagnosis was confirmed by serology on 20th June 2011. The affected horse has been euthanased, but it is not clear whether restrictions are in place.
ITALY
Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA)
On 30th June 2011 RESPE reported several EIA outbreaks in Italy which were confirmed by serology between 29th January 2011 and 23rd June 2011. Four outbreaks have been reported in the province of Toscane, with two, and single horses affected on each premises, which included two, twenty-one, three, and no in contact horses, respectively. Other outbreaks have been reported in the provinces of Venice, and Campanie, with single horses affected on each premises, which included four, and eleven in contact horses, respectively. It is not clear whether the affected horses have been euthanased but restrictions are in place.
ROMANIA
Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA)
On 30th June 2011 RESPE reported several EIA positive horses in Romania which were confirmed by serology between 21st June 2011 and 27th June 2011. Sampling for EIA was performed in the framework of the national programme for surveillance. Eight positive EIA horses have been reported in the district of Brasov, with three, and single horses affected on each premises, which included 1 in contact horse on one premises and no in contact horses on five premises. Ten positive EIA horses from five different premises have been reported in the district d’Alba with no in contact horses on the premises. None of these horses showed any signs of disease but it is not clear whether the affected horses have been euthanased. Epidemiological investigations are ongoing and restrictions are in place.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
West Nile Encephalitis (WNE)
As of 30th June 2011 three cases of WNE in horses have very been reported. Two cases occurred in Northeastern North Dakota and the other in Pennsylvania. These bring the current total of equine cases of WNE in the USA in 2011 to four.
