Equine Influenza
On 1st November 2011, the Animal Health Trust confirmed equine influenza in two horses in East Renfrewshire, Scotland. The diagnosis was made on the basis of positive results via ELISA on nasopharyngeal swabs. The affected premises consists of two horses that have been showing clinical signs of coughing, nasal discharge and lethargy. One horse is a three year old stallion used competitively and the second horse is a four year old gelding which has recently been imported. Further investigations are being carried out regarding the source of the outbreak.
Sweden
Salmonella typhimurium
Infection confirmed on two premises with the source of infection being a large standard bred stud farm that has had Salmonellosis three times in the last seven years. The disease was spread to an equine hospital by a foal. The dam of the infected foal also had a foal two years ago that spread Salmonella typhimurium to another equine hospital. The dam has tested ngative in several consecutive samples. The Swedish Board of Agriculture is now in charge of controlling the outbreak.
