Interim Report – January 2012 #1 (06.01.12)

AFGHANISTAN
Glanders (Burkholderia mallei)
On 31st December 2011 theWorld Organisation for Animal Health (OIE)received information from the General Directorate of Animal Health and Production, Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation & Livestock, Kabul, Afghanistan regarding a glanders sero-surveillance which was carried out in response to a glanders outbreak earlier in the year.

A total of 240 serum samples were collected from 189 horses and 53 donkeys in the affected region during October and November 2011. These, along with two serum samples obtained from the infected farm in June 2011 were sent to the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory in Dubai (UAE), an OIE reference laboratory for glanders. Ten equine samples were confirmed positive which resulted in a 4.1% sero-prevalence in the affected region.

The source of the outbreak is linked to the illegal movement of animals. Initial control measures involved quarantine but stricter animal movement control is to be implemented; and further research and surveillance is required.
