MEXICO
Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis (VEE)
On 10th August 2011 the Secretariat of Agriculture, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) in Mexico notified OIE of the occurrence of fatal clinical Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) in an 8-week-old Quarter horse foal on a semi-intensive farm used for breeding and leisure purposes with 100 resident horses in the Villa Luis Gil Perez area of the state of Tabasco. The case occurred on 19th July 2011 with laboratory confirmation of the diagnosis made on 2nd August by the Mexico-United States Commission for the Prevention of Foot-and-Mouth Disease and other Foreign Animal Diseases (National laboratory) on the bassi of positive results by RT-PCR and virus isolation. Results of virus sequencing are pending.
MONGOLIA
Equine Influenza
On 10th August 2011 the Chief Veterinary Officer, Veterinary and Animal Breeding Agency, Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, updated the OIE regarding the widespread occurrence of clinical H3N8 equine influenza in Mongolia. The report detailed 103 separate outbreaks occurring mainly in central and eastern parts of Mongolia and involving 74,608 cases with 40 deaths from the disease were reported.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE)
Two cases of EEE were confirmed in Florida bringing that states current total to three cases and the national total to five for the year to date.
West Nile Virus Encephalitis (WNE)
One case of WNE was diagnosed in a horse in North Dakota, bringing that states total to three and the current national total to five for the year to date.
