VARIOUS COUNTRIES
Atypical Myopathy
On 1st of November 2011, the Atypical Myopathy Alert Group (AMAG), coordinated through the University of Liege, Belgium, reported that 39 clinical cases that were compatible with the diagnosis of atypical myopathy that had been communicated to them so far in autumn 2011. These cases were recorded in Belgium (3 cases), France (15 cases), Germany (4 cases), Great-Britain (14 cases), Switzerland (1 case), Austria (1 case) and the USA (1 case).
FRANCE
Equine Herpes Virus-4 (EHV-4)
On 4th November 2011 the Réseau d’Epidémio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine (RESPE) reported an outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus-4 (EHV-4) in Seine et Marne, France. One horse was affected and a positive diagnosis was made by PCR of a nasopharyngeal swab. The affected animal is a 4yr old, male, French Saddlebred competition horse that showed clinical signs of nasal discharge and pyrexia.
GREECE
West Nile Virus (WNV)
On 2nd November 2011 an outbreak of West Nile Virus was reported in the Central region of Greece by RESPE based on information received from the French Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. One horse was affected which confirmed positive on 6th October and later died. Epidemiological investigations are in progress.
ITALY
West Nile Virus (WNV)
On 2nd November 2011 a number of outbreaks of West Nile Virus were reported on mainland Italy and Sardinia by RESPE based on information received from the French Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries.
In Sardinia three outbreaks were reported on the 19th October 2011 involving one horse at each establishment and a further outbreak reported on 21st October 2011 also involved one horse. On mainland Italy three outbreaks have been reported. Two outbreaks were reported in Venice on 14th October 2011, each involving one horse; and a third outbreak was reported in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region on 26th October which also involved one horse.
Epidemiological investigations are on-going in all of the outbreaks.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE)
As of 1st November there has been an increase of six in the number of equine cases of EEE recorded in the USA since October 12th with the national total currently standing at 60 cases in 2011. Wisconsin accounted for half of the increase, with that state’s total now at 34. Other states with confirmed cases of the disease include: New York (12), Florida (4), Louisiana and Michigan (3 cases each), N. Carolina (2), Mississippi and Vermont (single cases each).
West Nile Virus (WNV)
As of 1st November the number of cases of WNV encephalitis has risen sharply over the past three weeks, with 104 recorded to date in 2011. The greatest increase has occurred in California with 35 cases, followed by Pennsylvania (10), N. Dakota (7), Arizona (6), Ohio (4), Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Nevada, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin (3 cases each), Iowa, Maryland, New Mexico, New York and Oregon (2 cases each), and Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, S. Dakota and Virginia (single cases each). To this point in 2011, a total of 28 states have had diagnosed cases of WNE.
