FRANCE
Equine Influenza
On 5th December 2011 Réseau d’Epidémio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine (RESPE) reported a case of equine influenza with 1 out of 10 animals affected at a training centre in Val-de-Marne, France. Equine influenza virus infection was confirmed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab in a seven-year-old female, vaccinated, three-year-old, French Trotter with signs of nasal discharge and fever. Further work is in progress to characterise the strain of equine influenza virus involved in the outbreak. This case is known to be epidemiologically linked to the cases reported for the same region on 16th, 18th and 23rd November 2011.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE)
Within the past week, a case of EEE was confirmed in North Carolina, bringing that state’s seasonal total to 2 and the US total to 63.
West Nile Encephalitis (WNE)
The national total of cases of WNE stands at 114, with no additional cases reported since November 29th.
