Equine Influenza
As of 16th November 2011 Réseau d’Epidémio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine (RESPE) has reported an outbreak of equine influenza with 5 out of 25 animals affected at a training centre in Val-de-Marne, France. Equine influenza virus infection was confirmed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab in a non-vaccinated two-year-old, French Trotte,r filly with signs of coughing, nasal discharge and fever. Further work is in progress to characterise the strain of equine influenza virus involved in the outbreak.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE)
As of 8th November 2011 the total number of equine cases of EEE in the USA stands at 62,an increase of two over the figure of a week ago. The following are states with diagnosed cases of EEE: Wisconsin (34 cases), New York (12), Florida (4), Louisiana and Michigan (3 each), North Carolina (2), Mississippi, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Vermont (1 each).
West Nile Encephalitis (WNE)
As of 8th November 2011 the national total of confirmed cases of WNE in the USA currently stands at 110, an increase of six over the figure of a week ago. Totals for states with cases of the disease are: California (38), Pennsylvania (10), N. Dakota (7), Arizona (6), Ohio and Texas (4 each), Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Nevada, Tennessee and Wisconsin (3 each), Connecticut, Iowa, Maryland, New Mexico, New York, Oregon (2 each), Delaware, Idaho, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, S. Dakota and Virginia (1 each).
