Interim Report – October 2011 #3 (13.10.11)

Australia
Hendra Virus
On 13th October 2011 the Queensland Government Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries reported a case of Hendra virus in the Caboolture area of Queensland. The affected horse was confirmed positive on 10th October 2011 and euthanased the following day. The property has been placed under quarantine whilst investigations are being carried out.

France
Equine Herpes Virus-4 (EHV-4)
On 12th October 2011 the Réseau d’Epidémio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine (RESPE) reported an outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus-4 (EHV-4) in Seine et Marne, France. One horse, a purebred Arabian, was affected. A positive diagnosis was made by PCR of a nasopharyngeal swab. 

Greece
West Nile Virus (WNV)
On 12th October 2011 an outbreak of West Nile Virus was reported in Viotia, Greece by RESPE based on information received from the French Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. Four horses were affected and were confirmed positive by ELISA. Epidemiological investigations are in progress.  

Italy
Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA)
An outbreak of equine infectious anaemia (EIA) has been reported in Padova, Italy by RESPE on 12th October 2011, based on information received from the French Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. The outbreak was confirmed on 26th September 2011 where one horse was affected. It is unclear as to whether the affected horse showed clinical signs of disease or had been euthanased. Epidemiological investigations are ongoing.

West Nile Virus (WNV)
On 12th October 2011 numerous outbreak of West Nile Virus were reported in Sardinia and mainland Italy RESPE based on information received from the French Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries.

On mainland Italy, one outbreak was confirmed in Venice on 13th September 2011 which involved one horse. Two outbreaks were reported in Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. The first outbreak was confirmed in Pordenone on 13th September 2011 involving two horses and the second was confirmed in Udine on 15th September 2011 which involved one horse. Two further outbreaks were reported on mainland Italy and both confirmed on 28th September 2011. One outbreak involving one horse occurred in Matera, Basilicata; and the second, involving two horses occurred in Crotone, Calabria.

In Sardinia, outbreaks have been reported in Oristano and Cagliari. Five outbreaks occurred in Oristano. The first was confirmed on 16th September which involved two horses. The remaining four outbreaks were confirmed on 26th September 2011. Two outbreaks involved one horse each and the fate of these horses is unclear. A third outbreak involved a horse which subsequently died and the fourth outbreak involved thirteen horses, of which two died. Finally, the outbreak reported in Cagliari was confirmed on 30th September 2011 and involved one horse which later died.

All cases were confirmed positive by ELISA and epidemiological investigations are on-going.
