As of 14th February 2011 the Réseau d’Epidémio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine (RESPE) has reported an outbreak of EHV-1 causing neurological disease in Herault, France. The affected horse, an unvaccinated 12 year-old Arab broodmare, showed ataxia, colic, recumbency, oedema and sweating and was diagnosed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab. There are 4 horses in total on the premises and no further cases have been reported.

Following the outbreak of EHV-1 reported by RESPE on 7th February 2011 in Pas-de-Calais, France, three new cases have been reported on the same premises. Three mares (5, 7 and 9 years-old respectively) were reported as affected, two of them showing pyrexia and cough and the third showing neurological signs and pyrexia. There have been five cases so far out of a total of 30 horses on the same premises. Two of the affected mares were diagnosed by PCR on blood whereas the third mare was diagnosed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab.

Typing of the EIV isolate is ongoing.

Following the EIV outbreaks previously reported in Val de Marne, France, as of 11th February 2011 RESPE has reported two further outbreaks in the same area that have been epidemiologically linked to the previously reported outbreaks. Both outbreaks have involved single affected horses (a 4 year-old French Trotter male horse and a 5 year-old French Trotter male horse respectively) showing cough, nasal discharge and pyrexia. Both cases had been vaccinated for EI and were diagnosed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab. Typing of the two EIV isolates is ongoing.
