Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) Neurological Disease - update on outbreaks in the western states
The USDA, APHIS, VS has released an initial situation report of the number of suspect or confirmed cases of equine herpesvirus-1 neurological disease or EHV-1 myeloencephalopathy (EHM), as well as the number of premises involved to this point. The data are based on information provided by the Animal Health Officials in different states. Cases/outbreaks are primarily but not exclusively in Western states in the US and involve horses that attended the National Cutting Horse Association’s Western National Championship in Ogden, Utah in early May, or any horse that came into contact with those that had competed at the show.
Suspect cases of EHM are horses that developed neurological signs characteristic or highly suggestive of the disease but which lacked laboratory confirmation. Suspect (12 cases) and/or confirmed cases (12 cases) of EHM have so far been reported from California, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Washington. The total number of horses that died or were euthanased is 7, but not all of which were confirmed cases. The total number of exposed premises with suspect/confirmed cases of EHM or EHV-1 infection in the absence of neurological signs currently stands at 40. The states reporting exposed premises with suspect/confirmed cases of EHM or equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) infection in the absence of neurological signs are as follows: Arizona (1), California (6), Colorado (6), Idaho (6), Montana (1), Nevada (2), New Mexico (2), Oklahoma (1), Oregon (2), Texas (2), Utah (3), Washington (7) and Wyoming (1). Additional reports will be forthcoming as further information becomes available.
