GERMANY
Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA)
On 12th December 2011 the Chief Veterinary Officer, Directorate of Animal Health, Animal Welfare, Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV), Bonn, Germany reported to the OIE a clinical case of equine infectious anaemia in a single horse on a farm in Vacha, Wartburgkreis, Thuringia, Germany. The diagnosis was confirmed by the Friedrich-Loeffler Institute (National Laboratory) by Agar Gel Immunodiffusion (AGID) test. The affected animal was destroyed and control measures include control of arthropods; quarantine; movement controls inside the country; screening of contact animals and disinfection.
SWEDEN
Equine Influenza
Further to the previous report of equine influenza on 9th December 2011, further information has been received confirming that all affected horses are standardbred trotting racehorses with diagnoses made by the SVA-laboratory using PCR. A common factor linking all cases has been identified as commercial horse transport that took horses from the Stockholm area to Umeå and Boden on the 1st of December 2011, with 8 of 9 of horses confirmed with the virus. Most infected horses have shown signs of fever lasting 1-2 days, mild anorexia and upper respiratory disease, with one horse having pneumonia.

On premise D there was spread from 2 transported horses to 35 other horses among 48 in total. Investigations are underway at this stable as to whether vaccination has been carried out according to official requirements.

Two horses were delivered by the transporter to premise E. Horses were then infected on premises F and G by being kept in paddocks that were close to the two infected horses on premise E.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE)
Two cases of EEE have been confirmed in Florida, both in unvaccinated horses on the same premises. Onset of clinical signs was sudden and progression of illness rapid, with both horses succumbing within 48 hours. The national US total of EEE cases stands at 65.
West Nile Encephalitis (WNE)
The current national total of cases of WNE is 115, an increase of one additional case of the disease in Texas within the past week.
