UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) Neurological Disease
As of 7th June 2011, the latest report provided by USDA, APHIS, VS on the current situation regarding outbreaks of equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in the Western states in the US, would indicate that the number of cases of the disease is rapidly waning. The number of states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah and Washington) with suspect or confirmed cases of the EHM has remained unchanged over the past week. No new premises have been identified with suspected or confirmed cases of EHM or EHV-1 infection (without associated neurological signs). The total number of exposed premises as of June 7th was 241, of which 61 had suspect or confirmed cases of EHM/EHV-1 infection and 180 had no cases. Similarly, the number of the EHM horses that died or had to be euthanased remains at 12. The total number of confirmed cases of EHM currently stands at 33, one more than a week ago. This comprises 26 primary exposed horses and seven secondary or tertiary exposed individuals. Aside from cases of EHM, there have been some 55 confirmed cases of EHV-1 infection (with no neurological findings), of which 32 were in primary exposed animals and 23 were in secondary or tertiary exposed animals. While the number of suspect or confirmed cases of EHV-1 infection in primary exposed horses remained at 72, the corresponding total for secondary and tertiary cases currently stands at 45. All suspect and confirmed cases of EHV-1/EHM are reportedly under voluntary or state quarantine as are all exposed horses. Standardised recommendations developed by state and federal officials emphasised isolation of exposed horses, monitoring for clinical signs of neurologic disease and the need to test and treatment of affected horses. Biosecurity measures are available for premises with suspect or confirmed case of the disease. A further update of the situation will be provided next week.
