FRANCE
EHV-1 causing multiple abortions
As of 16th February 2011 the Réseau d’Epidémio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine (RESPE) has reported an outbreak of EHV-1 causing multiple abortions in Ain, France. Out of 32 animals on the premises, 4 have been reported as affected and two of these (French saddlebred mares) have been confirmed to be EHV-1 positive by PCR on a uterine swab and fetal tissues respectively.
EHV-1 causing paralytic disease
As of 25th February 2011 RESPE has also reported an outbreak of EHV-1 causing paralytic disease in Seine-Maritime, France. Three horses have been reported as affected (recumbent) and all three died; one of them was confirmed to be positive for EHV-1 by PCR in samples from brain. There are 30 horses in total on the premises, none of them are vaccinated for EHV-1/-4.
Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM)
As of 25th February 2011 RESPE has reported CEM in a 15 year-old French Trotter mare in Eure, France. The mare was diagnosed by means of culture from a uterine swab. No further horses have been reported on the premises.
NETHERLANDS
Equine Piroplasmosis
On 16th February 2011 the OIE has reported the first occurrence of Equine Piroplasmosis (EP) in Zeeland, Netherlands. Following an epidemiological survey conducted on the prevalence of EP in the Netherlands 300 horses were screened and 7 tested positive by indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test in August 2010. The outbreak was resolved on 9th September 2010 but it has only been reported now.
UNITED KINGDOM
EHV-1 causing abortion and neonatal foal weakness
On 25th February 2011 an outbreak of EHV-1 causing abortion and a weak neonatal foal was confirmed on a Thoroughbred stud in Cheshire, UK. EHV-1 was diagnosed by PCR in one aborted fetus in January 2011 and the placenta from a mare that gave birth to a weak neonatal foal was confirmed as positive for EHV-1 by PCR on 25th February. The stud also reported another abortion within this period which was not investigated.
