PORTUGAL
West Nile Encephalitis (WNE)
On 27th September 2010 the OIE has reported the first occurrence of West Nile Virus (WNV) in equids in Portugal. An outbreak involving a positive horse has been reported in Lisboa e Vale do Tejo, near Lisbon. Restrictions have been placed on the affected premises, where there was only one susceptible horse. The affected horse has been humanely destroyed on welfare grounds. Investigations are ongoing.

Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE)
As of 26th October 2010, the total number of confirmed equine cases of EEE currently stands at 227, an increase of 10 since reported on 5th October. The greatest number of cases have been reported from Florida (92), followed by Michigan (57), Mississippi (20), Indiana and New York (10 apiece), Alabama and Georgia (8 each), Massachusetts and Ohio (4 each), and single cases in Illinois, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin. It is clear from the figures from Florida, Michigan and Mississippi that the number of cases of EEE reported from each of these states is on the decline.
West Nile Encephalitis (WNE)
The number of confirmed equine cases of WNE as of 26th October is 123. California (38) and Florida (21) lead the list of affected states with cases also recorded in Colorado (7), Indiana, Kentucky and Texas (6 apiece), Idaho, Louisiana, N. Dakota and Utah (3 each), followed by 1-2 cases in each of the following: Arizona, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, N. Carolina, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
