Dourine (Trypanosoma equiperdum)
Following the two outbreaks of Dourine, in the area of Scordia, Catania, Sicilie, Italy, initially reported on 31st May 2011, the situation as of 15th June is as follows. On 14th June 2011 the Department for Veterinary Public Health, Nutrition and Food Safety, Ministry of Health, Rome, Italy, reported to the OIE a further outbreak of Dourine in the area Frattamaggiore, Napoli, Italy. In this outbreak two horses are affected subclinical with 8 in contact horses present on the premises. Infection with Trypanosoma equiperdum was confirmed by complement fixation test (CFT) performed by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute (IZS), Teramo (National laboratory). The source of the infection is still inconclusive and disease control measures are in place.
