Interim Report – November 2011 #6 (23.11.11)
UNITED KINGDOM
Equine Influenza
On 23rd November 2011 the Animal Health Trust confirmed equine influenza in two horses in Berkshire, England. Diagnoses were made in both horses on the basis of seroconversions to H3N8 influenza virus in a haemagglutination inhibition (HI) test. Both horses were unvaccinated, used for hunting and showed clinical signs of bilateral purulent nasal discharge, pyrexia, dull, inappetant and a hacking cough. The source of the infection was thought to be from a horse that temporarily visited the yard on which the affected horses were kept.
FRANCE
Equine Influenza
On 23rd November 2011 Réseau d’Epidémio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine (RESPE) reported a case of equine influenza with 1 out of 15 animals affected at a training centre in Val-de-Marne, France. Equine influenza virus infection was confirmed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab in a male, vaccinated, three-year-old, French Trotter with signs of coughing, nasal discharge and fever. Further work is in progress to characterise the strain of equine influenza virus involved in the outbreak. It is not clear whether this case is linked to those reported for the same region on 16th and 18th November 2011.
