Greece
West Nile Virus (WNV)
On 19th October 2011 an outbreak of West Nile Virus was reported in Epire, Greece by the Réseau d’Epidémio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine (RESPE) based on information received from the French Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. One horse was affected and was confirmed positive on 6th October 2011. Epidemiological investigations are in progress.
Hungary
West Nile Virus (WNV)
On 19th October 2011 an outbreak of West Nile Virus was reported in central Hungary by RESPE based on information received from the French Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. One horse was affected and confirmed positive on 14th October 2011 and epidemiological investigations are in progress
Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA)
An outbreak of equine infectious anaemia (EIA) has been reported in Northern Hungary by RESPE on 19th October 2011, based on information received from the French Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. The outbreak was confirmed by serology on 11th October 2011. One horse was affected and later died.
Italy
West Nile Virus (WNV)
Two outbreaks of West Nile Virus were reported on 19th October 2011 in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy by RESPE based on information received from the French Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. The first outbreak occurred on 8th October 2011 and the second on 12th October 2011. One horse was affected in each of the outbreaks and epidemiological investigations are ongoing.
Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA)
Four outbreaks of equine infectious anaemia (EIA) have been reported in Italy by RESPE on 12th October 2011, based on information received from the French Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. The most recent outbreak occurred in the Campania region of Italy. One horse was affected and was confirmed positive on 22nd September 2011. Prior to this, cases were confirmed earlier this year in the Lazio region of Italy. Two outbreaks were confirmed on the 1st April involving two horses and on the 7th of April involving one horse. A third outbreak involving five horses was confirmed on 1st March 2011. It is unclear as to whether any of the affected horse showed clinical signs of disease or had been euthanased. Movement restrictions were implemented and epidemiological investigations are ongoing.
Romania
Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA)
Four outbreaks of equine infectious anaemia (EIA) have been reported in the Dobruja region of Romania by RESPE on 19th October 2011, based on information received from the French Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. All outbreaks were confirmed on 10th October 2011 involving twelve horses in total. It is unclear as to whether the affected horses showed clinical signs of disease or had been euthanased. Movement restrictions have been implemented and epidemiological investigations are ongoing.
Spain
West Nile Virus (WNV)
On 19th October 2011 an outbreak of West Nile Virus was reported in Andalucia, Spain by RESPE based on information received from the French Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. Seven horses were affected and were confirmed positive by ELISA. Epidemiological investigations are ongoing.
