Equine Herpesvirus -1 (EHV-1) Abortion
A single case of EHV-1 abortion was confirmed on 23rd January 2012 by the Animal Health Trust in a Thoroughbred mare in Suffolk. Diagnosis was made by positive PCR on fetal tissues and placenta. Control measures are being undertaken in accordance with the HBLB Codes of Practice.

Equine Herpesvirus -1 (EHV-1) Neurological Disease
Two additional cases of infection with a neuropathogenic strain of EHV-1 has been confirmed on a premises in Orange County, California, bringing the total number of diagnosed cases of the infection on this premises to eleven. There is no indication that the latest case exhibited signs of neurological disease. Both cases only displayed fever. The premises in question is under strict quarantine with no horses allowed on or off the property.
Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM)
On 20th January 2012, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reported an update regarding an outbreak of CEM reported in July 2011. Epidemiological diagnostic investigations carried out have not established a relationship between the positive stallion and horses associated with previous cases of CEM. The stallion which tested positive is now considered free of T. equigenitalis. Seventeen stallions and thirteen mares may have been in contact with the index case and were initially quarantined. To date all of the stallions and four mares are now considered negative. One mare died from unrelated causes before the completion of testing and the remaining eight mares are not eligible to complete testing until they foal, although testing to date has been negative.
