Interim Report – April 2011 #7 (20.04.11)

FRANCE

Equine Influenza Virus (EIV)
Following the EIV outbreak previously reported in Orne, France, Réseau d’Epidémio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine (RESPE) has, as of 20th April 2011, reported an update of the present situation in this outbreak. Several foals died between 8th and 14th April and 70 adults out of 130 have presented with clinical signs that included fever, coughing and nasal discharge. PCR applied to nasopharyngeal swabs were positive for EIV in a two-day-old foal and post mortem examination and testing performed on four foals (one stillborn foal, two foals at three-days-old and one foal at two-weeks-old) at Laboratoire Frank Duncombe and/or ANSES Dozulé were positive for EIV by PCR applied to lung samples in 3 foals, with the fourth foal testing negative. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the infecting influenza virus was characterised as clade 2 Florida sublineage H3N8 virus. Two mares originating from the Loire region are suspected of being the source of the outbreak.
