Interim Report – June 2011 #8 (20.06.11)
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) Neurological Disease
The situation report provided by USDA, APHIS, VS on cases/outbreaks of equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in the Western states in the US indicates that as of June 16th, this disease occurrence is nearly over. The total number of confirmed cases of EHM of 33 has remained unchanged from a week ago. One additional state, Nevada, has been added to the existing list of states with confirmed cases of EHV-1 (without neurological signs) or EHM (Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah and Washington). There has been an increase of one in the number of exposed premises, the total currently stands at 242, of which 180 had no cases of EHM or EHV-1 infection (without neurological signs). The number of horses that have died or had to be euthanased is 13, an increase of one over the previous week’s total. Apart from cases of EHM, there have been 57 confirmed cases of EHV-1 infection (without neurological signs) of which 28 were in primary exposed animals and 29 were in secondary or tertiary exposed animals. The number of suspect or confirmed cases of EHV-1 infection in primary exposed horses is 68 while the corresponding total for secondary or tertiary cases is currently at 51. All suspect and confirmed cases of EHV-1/EHM are reportedly under voluntary or state quarantine, as are all exposed horses. Standardised recommendations developed by state and federal officials emphasised isolation of exposed horses, monitoring for clinical signs of neurological disease and the need to test and treat affected horses. Biosecurity measures are available for premises with suspect or confirmed case of the disease.
West Nile Virus (WNV) Encephalitis
The first officially confirmed case of West Nile virus encephalitis has been reported in a horse in southeast Georgia. No details of the case including whether the horse had been vaccinated against West Nile virus are currently available.
