FRANCE

Equine Herpes Virus -1 respiratory disease (EHV-1)

On 30th March 2011 the Réseau d’Epidémio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine (RESPE) reported an outbreak of respiratory disease due to EHV-1 infection in a pleasure horse in the province of Ille-et-Vilaine, France. EHV-1 infection has been confirmed on the basis of positive PCR in a nasal swab from a 3 year-old mare showing hyperthermia, nasal discharge and weariness. No other horses were resident on the premises.

ITALY

Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA)

On 29th March 2011 the Réseau d’Epidémio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine (RESPE) reported several EIA outbreaks in Italy which were confirmed by serology between January 2011 and March 2011. Four outbreaks have been reported in the province of Abruzzes, with single horses affected on each premises, which included five, four, two and one in contact horses, respectively. Other outbreaks have been reported in the provinces of Campanie, Pouilles, Basilicate, Latium, and Molise with single horses affected on each premises, which included 61, 18, three, four and no horses in contact, respectively. It is not clear whether the affected horses have been euthanased but restrictions are in place.  

CROATIA

Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA)

On 29th March 2011 the Réseau d’Epidémio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine (RESPE) reported an EIA outbreak in the province of Comitat de Karlovac, which was confirmed by serology on 17th March 2011. One horse was affected and no other horses were resident on the premises. It is not clear whether the affected horse has been euthanased but restrictions are in place.
