Canine DNA Testing FAQs
Q1. For the parentage test, do you need a sample from both parents?
We require samples from the mother, the offspring and the father(s). If there is a possibility of more than one father we need samples from each father.
As there is always the possibility of a split litter (different pups having different fathers), to be sure of the parentage for all the puppies we would recommend that you test the full litter.
Q2. Which tests are available for my breed?
Most of our tests are now available to order through our Webshop.
For Canine Parentage and CAT PKD tests, please contact dnatesting@aht.co.uk for information on ordering tests and submitting samples.
Q3. Is there a minimum age my dogs can be tested?
Pups must be at least four weeks of age and weaned to ensure that there is no carry-over from the mother.
Q4. What type of sample do I need to send?
Most of our tests are now carried out using cheek swabs. Only Cat PKD require 1mls EDTA blood sample.
Q5. How much does it cost?
Prices reflect the complexity of the laboratory testing processes and can be found on our Canine DNA Testing page as well as on our Webshop. Please note that VAT (charged at 20%) is payable by residents within the European Union, but not those living outside the European Union.
Q6. If I order two tests at the same time (for example L2HGA and HC) will I get the results for the two tests at the same time?
Turnaround times for tests may differ; we will send you separate results for each test as soon as they are ready.
Q7. Do we need special swabs?
We can only accept swabs issued by the Animal Health Trust Genetic Services department – they are easily identifiable by our logo on the packaging. Please do not send other swabs which may not be accepted and will delay testing.
Q8. How am I notified of test results?
When ordering via the Webshop you can choose how you would like to receive your test results. The quickest way is by email which will have your certificate attached as a PDF document.
All other orders will receive results by email as above unless specified on the Request for DNA Testing form.
Q9. How long will results take to come through?
This may depend on the test you have requested; current average turnaround times are shown here
Q10. I submitted more than one sample for testing but have not received all results together?
If you are waiting for more than one test result, they may not all be reported at the same time
Q11. I need to update details for samples submitted – how?
Please contact dnatesting@aht.org.uk for further information.
Q12. Does a DNA profile test confirm the breed of my dog?
No, we do not currently offer a DNA test to confirm the breed of a dog.
Q13. I have a research kit; can I submit a sample for a DNA test using this?
No, research kits are only for use by the research department. Please see Q2 for how to obtain correct testing kits for DNA testing
Q14. Does a veterinary surgeon have to take the sample?
Whilst we are happy for owners to take swabs themselves, some breed clubs have rules in place stating that a vet must take the sample. For this reason please check with your club before you take the sample.
For the CAT PKD which requires a blood sample, the sample must be taken by a vet.
Q15. How can I get my dog dna tested?
You need to place an order via the AHT webshop www.ahtdnatesting.co.uk
You will need your dogs identification details and a card to make your payment
Unless for parentage or profile testing, in this case email dnatesting@aht.co.uk
Q16. Which dna tests are available and for which breed of dogs?
