Interim ICC Report – August 2019 #04 (06.08.19) – Report from France on Rotavirus & Strangles, UK on Equine Influenza (EI) and USA on Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE) & Equine Neorickettsiosis

France

Rotavirus

On 6 August 2019, RESPE confirmed a case of rotavirus on a premises in Mayene.  Positive diagnosis was confirmed by PCR on fecal matter by LABEO Frank Duncombe.

 

On 6 August 2019, RESPE confirmed an outbreak of rotavirus on two animals on a premises in Orne.  Clinical signs included diarrhoea.  Positive diagnoses were confirmed by PCR on fecal matter by LABEO Frank Duncombe.

 

Strangles

On 6 August 2019, RESPE confirmed a case of strangles in a four-year-old French Saddlebred on a premises in Ille et Vilaine.  Clinical signs included pyrexia and nasal discharge.  Positive diagnosis was confirmed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab by LABEO Frank Duncombe.

 

UK

Equine Influenza (EI)

On 1 August 2019, AHT confirmed an outbreak of EI on a premises in Neath Port Talbot. The laboratory confirmed positive is an unvaccinated non-Thoroughbred that presented with coughing and nasal discharge. There are around 20 in contacts. The positive diagnosis was confirmed by PCR on nasopharyngeal swabs.

 

USA

Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE)

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has reported 18 cases of EEE that were confirmed in the state over the period February through to the present.  Details are as follows:

  • 3-year-old Quarter Horse stallion; Bay County; 24 February 2019; euthanased; vaccination status not reported
  • 12-year-old. Quarter horse gelding; Bay County; 26 February 2019; euthanased; under-vaccinated

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed a case of EEE in a yearling Paint gelding on a premises in Kalamazoo.  Onset of clinical signs was 22 July 2019, with the horse presenting with pyrexia and inability to rise.  The diagnosis was confirmed on 2 August 2019.  The subject has been euthanased.  No history of vaccination has been reported.

 

Equine Neorickettsiosis (Potomac Horse Fever)

The Massachusetts State Veterinarian has reported two cases of equine neorickettsiosis, one in a horse in Essex County and the other in a horse in Norfolk County.  The first case was at a boarding facility and the second case involved a horse that presented with anorexia, diarrhea, pyrexia and gastric discomfort on 16 July 2019.  The second case was reported as alive and recovering from the infection.  Vaccination status of the two horses was either not reported or unknown.
