Equine Influenza (EI)

On 4 February 2019, AHT confirmed two separate outbreaks of EI in Suffolk. The first is in a group of vaccinated two-year-old Thoroughbreds that presented with coughing, nasal discharge and pyrexia. There are eight confirmed positives amongst a group of 15.  Preventative biosecurity measures have been implemented and the appropriate vaccine manufacturers and the Veterinary Medicines Directorate will be made aware of this outbreak.  The second is in a group of unvaccinated two-year-old non-Thoroughbreds that also presented with coughing, nasal discharge and pyrexia. There are a total of six confirmed positives with no other direct in contacts, although there are around 40 other horses at the premises. The affected group have been isolated and all other horses on the premises are being closely monitored. For both outbreaks, positive diagnoses were made by PCR on nasopharyngeal swabs.
