Interim ICC Report – January 19 #10 (17.01.19)

Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA)

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has confirmed a case of EIA on a premises  in the Municipal District of Bonnyville, Alberta on 11 January.   The horse had been tested after it had been purchased from an auction mart.   The horse was clinically normal at time of sampling.  A quarantine has been placed on the infected animal and other equids on the index premises.  The quarantine will remain in force until all disease response activities are complete; this includes follow-up testing and euthanasia of the index case and any other animals found  positive.

Equine Influenza

Equine influenza has been confirmed on two premises in Munster, a Thoroughbred stud farm and a show jumping yard. Clinical signs have been observed in both vaccinated and unvaccinated horses but the latter are more severely affected.

The virus has been typed by the OIE Reference Laboratory at the Irish Equine Centre. The haemagglutinin and neuraminidase genes have been sequenced and the virus identified as belonging to Clade 1 of the Florida sublineage. This is the first identification of a Clade 1 virus in Ireland since early 2010.
