Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) Abortion
On 9 January 2019, RESPE reported a case of EHV-1 abortion on a stud premises in Calvados. The affected mare was an eight-year-old Thoroughbred with unknown vaccination status. The positive diagnosis was confirmed by PCR on placental tissue. There are a total of 20 horses at the premises.
Equine Influenza (EI)
On 8 January 2019, OIE reported an outbreak of EI in Nigeria. The outbreak was first confirmed on 17 December 2018, with a total of 93 cases and 37 deaths, with 217 susceptible horses or donkeys. The source of the infection is not confirmed but thought to be a result of sourcing of donkeys from a neighbouring country, resulting in illegal movements of animals. Further investigations revealed that the bulk of donkeys in the affected village came from a border town of Ruwa Wuri in Tangaza Local Government Area. Control measures include; movement control inside the country and treatment of affected animals. Vaccination is stated as prohibited. The positive diagnosis was confirmed by PCR by National Veterinary Research Institute Vom, Nigeria (Regional Reference Laboratory).
