Bulgaria

Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA)

On 21 January 2019, OIE reported a case of EIA in Pazardzik, southern Bulgaria. The affected horse had no clinical signs and was euthanased. The positive diagnosis was confirmed by Agar-immunodiffusion (antibody detection ELISA).

 

France

Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) Neurological Disease

On 18 January 2019, RESPE reported an outbreak of EHV-1 neurological disease on a premises in Eure. The laboratory confirmed the horse is unvaccinated and presented with ataxia, coughing, nasal discharge, pyrexia and recumbency. There are two horses with clinical signs amongst a group of 20. The positive diagnosis was confirmed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab by LABEO Frank Duncombe.

 

Equine Influenza (EI)

On 16 January 2019, RESPE reported a case of EI on a premises in Seine-et-Marne. The affected horse is a vaccinated two-year-old Warmblood that presented with coughing, nasal discharge and pyrexia. The positive diagnosis was confirmed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab. There are a total of 40 horses at the premises.

 

Strangles

On 18 January 2019, RESPE reported a case of strangles on a premises in Ille-et-Vilaine. The positive diagnosis was confirmed by culture on a swab by LABEO Frank Duncombe.

 

Germany

Equine Influenza (EI)

On 21 January 2019, Labor Dr. Böse GmbH confirmed a case of EI on a premises in federal state of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The positive diagnosis was confirmed by PCR on a nasal swab. The affected horse is vaccinated against EI and presented with pyrexia and respiratory disease.

 

USA

Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA)

On 18 January 2019, The Tennessee Department of Agriculture has reported EIA in three horses further to a racing Quarter Horse that was confirmed positive for the disease on a premises in Rutherford County and reported on 10 January 2019.  The three additional cases  were also Quarter Horses and cohorts to the index case.  All four horses have been euthanased.  Iatrogenic transmission is suspected.  Six other horses on the premises have tested negative and are currently under quarantine restrictions.  They will be retested in March.
