Interim ICC Report – March 2019 #01 (04.03.19) – Report from Canada on Equine Infectious Anaemia, France on EHV-1 Respiratory Infection, Equine Influenza & Strangles, UK on EHV-4 and EHV-1 Respiratory Infection & USA on Strangles

Canada

Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA)

The Canadian Animal Health Surveillance System reported EIA in four horses on a premises in the rural municipality of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan on 22 February.  The horses were epidemiologically linked to a previously identified case in Alberta.  An additional positive case was reported on 26 February involving a horse that was exhibiting clinical signs of the disease.  All of the horses have the same owner, but one resides on a separate premises.  An official quarantine has been imposed on the affected premises and all in-contact horses.  The quarantine will remain in force until all disease response activities have been completed, including follow-up testing and destruction of the infected animals.

 

France

Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) Respiratory Infection

On 4 March 2019, RESPE reported a case of EHV-1 respiratory infection on a premises in Seine-Maritime. The positive diagnosis was confirmed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab by LABEO Frank Duncombe.

 

Equine Influenza (EI)

On 26 February 2019, RESPE reported a case of EI on a training centre in Oise. The affected horse is a Thoroughbred. The positive diagnosis was confirmed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab. Movement restrictions have been put in place.

 

Strangles

On 4 March 2019, RESPE reported an outbreak of strangles on a premises in Ille-et-Vilaine. There are a total of six horses with clinical signs of coughing, inappetence and nasal discharge. There are two laboratory confirmed cases by PCR on nasopharyngeal swabs. There are a total of 25 horses on the premises.

 

On 4 March, RESPE reported a case of strangles in Deux-Sèvres. The positive diagnoses was confirmed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab by LABEO Frank Duncombe.

 

United Kingdom

Equine Herpes Virus-4 (EHV-4)

On 1 March 2019, AHT confirmed a case of EHV-4 on a premises in Essex. The positive diagnosis was confirmed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab.

 

Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) Respiratory Infection

On 28 February 2019, AHT confirmed a case of EHV-1 respiratory infection on a premises in South Wales. The affected horse is an unvaccinated non-Thoroughbred that presented with coughing and pyrexia. The positive diagnosis was confirmed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab. There are two additional horses with similar clinical signs.

 

On 28 February 2019, AHT confirmed an outbreak of EI in Shropshire. There are three non-Thoroughbreds with clinical sings of coughing and nasal discharge. Two are unvaccinated and one had a lapsed vaccination status . Positive diagnoses were confirmed by PCR on nasopharyngeal swabs. There are a total of 60 horses on the premises with varying vaccination status. Voluntary movement restrictions have been implemented and will continue until two weeks after resolution of clinical signs.

 

USA

Strangles

An attending veterinarian diagnosed a case of strangles on a premises in Augusta County, Virginia.    The index case is a six-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, first noted exhibiting clinical signs that included fever and abscessation of the submandibular lymphatic glands on 12 February.  The horse has been euthanased.  The horse had been on the premises for five weeks before it manifested signs of the disease.
