Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) Respiratory Infection

On 29 October 2018, RESPE reported a case of EHV-1 respiratory infection on a premises in Lot. The affected horse presented with coughing, nasal discharge and pyrexia. The positive diagnosis was confirmed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab by LABEO Frank Duncombe. The NP swab was also positive for EHV-4.

 

Equine Herpes Virus-4 (EHV-4) Respiratory Infection

On 29 October 2018, RESPE reported an outbreak of EHV-4 respiratory infection on a premises in Orne. Four horses were confirmed positive by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab by LABEO Frank Duncombe.

 

On 31 October 2018, RESPE reported two separate outbreaks of EHV-4 respiratory infection. The first was on a premises in Orne and the affected horse presented with nasal discharge. The second report involved five horses confirmed positive from a premises also in Orne. The affected horses presented with coughing, dyspnoea and nasal discharge. For all cases, positive diagnoses were made by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab by LABEO Frank Duncombe.

 

West Nile Virus (WNV)

On 30 October 2018, RESPE reported a case of WNV in Bouches-du-Rhône France. The affected horse presented with clinical signs consistent with disease. Positive diagnosis was confirmed by ELISA.

 

USA

Strangles

On 30 October 2018, The Washington State Department of Agriculture confirmed a case of strangles. The affected horse is a 17-year old Arabian gelding in Pierce County, Washington. The horse had nasal discharge, a fever and had a positive culture. A second horse was exposed and both are in voluntary quarantine. The vaccination history is unknown.
