Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) Respiratory Infection

On 9 November 2018, RESPE reported a case of EHV-1 respiratory infection on a premises in Calvados. The positive diagnosis was confirmed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab by LABEO Frank Duncombe.

 

Equine Herpes Virus-4 (EHV-4) Respiratory Infection

On 9 November 2018, RESPE reported three separate outbreaks EHV-4 respiratory infection. The first was on a premises in Ille-et-Vilaine and the affected horse presented with nasal discharge and pyrexia. The second report involved two horses testing positive on a premises in Calvados. The third outbreak reported was on a premises in Yvelines. The affected animal is a 14-year-old Shetland Pony mare that presented with coughing, lethargy, nasal discharge and pyrexia. There are a total of four horses with clinical signs, amongst a group of 50. Positive diagnoses were confirmed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab by LABEO Frank Duncombe.

 

Strangles

On 9 November 2018, RESPE reported a case of strangles in Orne. The affected horse presented with an abscess. The positive diagnosis was confirmed by culture on a swab.

 

UK

Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) Neurological Disease

On 9 November 2018, AHT confirmed a case of EHV-1 Neurological disease in the South East of England. The affected horse is an unvaccinated 14-year-old non-Thoroughbred that presented with acute ataxia, mucopurulent nasal discharge and lethargy. The positive diagnosis was confirmed by PCR on a nasopharyngeal swab. There are a total of 21 in contacts.
