Dogs may be affected by a number of proven or presumed inherited eye diseases which may affect vision or be painful.
The purpose of the Eye Scheme is to examine breeding dogs for these diseases so that their prevalence can be reduced by selective breeding.
The BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme (adult eye tests)
Any dog can undergo a hereditary eye disease test. This includes animals that are not registered with the Kennel Club and non-pedigrees. It is generally recommended that breeding dogs are tested on an annual basis.
The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has operated a hereditary eye disease screening scheme for over 30 years in conjunction with the Kennel Club (KC) and the International Sheep Dog Society (ISDS). The scheme covers 12 inherited eye conditions in over 50 breeds of dogs. Dogs are classified as unaffected or affected for the inherited eye condition. Although any breed can be examined under this scheme, only the results of those breeds on Schedule A of the Eye Scheme are sent to the Kennel Club for inclusion on computer records and printing in the Breeds Record Supplement. We will also stamp the Kennel Club registration certificate to confirm that an eye test has been performed.
What is involved in a BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme test?
An examination will be performed at the AHT by one of our specialists in veterinary ophthalmology. The entire process takes around 30 minutes as eye drops are normally needed to dilate the pupils. It is important to note the following:
If your dog is registered with the Kennel Club you MUST bring the ORIGINAL Kennel Club registration document with you. If you do not then the results of the eye test will be withheld until such time that you present this document.
All adult dogs must have readable permanent identification (usually a microchip) to enable a test to be performed.
Following the test, you will receive a certificate of the eye examination which states the result of the test. We will retain a copy of the certificate and another copy will be sent to the Kennel Club.
